‘Uplift BPL population to drive future growth’
India inc needs to uplift the below poverty level (BPL) population of the country to drive growth in the future, management guru and writer of best seller called ‘Count Your Chicken Before They Hatch’ professor Arindam Chaudhuri said here on Saturday.
Speaking at an interactive session at the Meruhants Chamber of Commerce Chaudhuri poled that sustained effort should be made to bring people to the level of consumer class from BPL to create a bigger market for the MNCs and Indian companies.
This should not be a socialist dream but a capitalist agenda. One should take the lesson from China which has removed large number of people from BPL to consumer class this creating much bigger market than India,” Chaudhuri, who is also dean of Centre For Economic Research and Advanced Studies, Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), added. Exposing the very basis of measuring the poverty level in the country, Chaudhuri remarked that the yardstick of classifying people earning just above the paltry sum Rs. 375 per month as non BPL was ridiculous.
